GOODYEAR, AZ -- The Cleveland Indians faced off against the Cincinnati Reds to kick off the 20201 Spring Training in Goodyear, Arizona. Cleveland right hander Cal Quantrill got the nod for the tribe, matchup up against Jose De Leon. Quantrill tossed two innings of scoreless baseball before being pulled for the youngster Triston Mackenzie. The tribe jumped out to a lead in the 6th inning, and went on to beat the Reds by the final score of 5-1.
Middle infielder Andres Gimenez made his Cleveland Indians debut, and started it with a bang, roping an RBI triple to right scoring Billy Hamilton. Gabriel Arias drilled a fastball the other way to right field for an RBI single. Indians prospect shortstop Tyler Freeman flashed the leather on a beautiful double play in the top half of the 7th inning.
Triston Mackenzie gave up the lone run for the tribe on a 2-out bloop single by Joey Votto that scored Kyle Farmer. Indians pitching combined for 9 strikeouts, while walking 8 and giving up one run.
The tribe will host the Kansas City Royals on Monday afternoon, first pitch set for 3:05 at Goodyear Ballpark in Goodyear, Arizona. Check out highlights from the Spring opener below!
