The CDC expects the cyclospora outbreaks in the US to continue through August, with 1,645 lab-confirmed cases and a backlog of 5,100 cases for further analysis.
Health officials are investigating outbreaks in Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky linked to cyclospora but have not yet identified the source. Lettuce is a potential source, and investigations are ongoing, including at Taco Bell locations in Michigan.
Cyclosporiasis is caused by the single-cell protozoa cyclospora, transmitted through contaminated water or food. The long incubation period makes tracking difficult, and past outbreaks have been linked to bagged salads, herbs, raspberries, and lettuces.
The Trump administration has faced criticism for cutting funding to state and local health departments leading up to the outbreak. The CDC is actively engaged in weekly calls with states about the outbreak but has not deployed staff due to tight state budgets.
