Cleveland's Flock license plate reader system is set to shut off at the end of the month after a City Council committee rejected a contract extension.

The Public Safety Committee voted 3-to-1 Wednesday against renewing the contract, which expires June 29.

Police say the cameras have helped with homicide cases, hit-and-runs, street takeovers, and missing-person cases.

Some council members and activists questioned whether the system has reduced crime enough to justify the cost.
