Montreal's pothole problem has gotten so bad that two private contractors decided to start fixing them on their own dime, and the city is telling them to stop.

Landscaper Saad Tekiout went viral after posting a video showing him patching potholes around the city, spending about $50 per hole out of his own pocket.

A second contractor, Anthony Khan, has also been filling holes using professional equipment that he says works faster than city crews.

Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada acknowledged the problem but said residents shouldn't be doing the repairs themselves.

A lawyer warned both men that they could face fines between $500 and $2,000 for performing unauthorized work on city property, but neither has said they plan to stop.
