Virginia Moves Away From Electoral College

Virginia recently became the 18th state to enact legislation that would assign its electoral votes to the winner of the national popular vote.

The National Popular Vote Compact aims to make every person's vote count the same, according to Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger.

The Electoral College has faced criticism for not representing the national popular vote and leading candidates to focus mostly on battleground states.

More than 6 in 10 Americans prefer the presidency to be won by the candidate with the most votes, according to a Pew Research survey.

The National Popular Vote Compact is seen as a way to render the Electoral College obsolete without the need for a constitutional amendment
