The Senate is set to debate the SAVE America Act, which would require proof of citizenship to register to vote and photo ID to cast a ballot, despite Senate Majority Leader Thune acknowledging that Republicans lack the votes to pass it.

Republicans view the legislation as uncontroversial, likening the voting requirements to obtaining a library card, while experts warn of potential implications for Americans without access to necessary documents.

President Trump has prioritized the SAVE America Act, threatening not to sign other bills until it passes, claiming it will ensure Republican victories in the midterm elections and accusing Democrats of wanting to cheat.

Senate Minority Leader Schumer opposes the bill, arguing that it makes voting harder and easier to steal elections, emphasizing that Democrats will not support it and will resist Republican efforts to advance it.

The SAVE America Act would mandate states to verify voter citizenship and require proof of citizenship documents if the ID does not indicate citizenship, with some states complying by providing voter registration lists to the federal government for verification.
