The U.S. Department of Agriculture is approving a request from Ohio officials to ban soda purchases with SNAP benefits.

A federal waiver will now prohibit sugary drink sales using money from the federal food assistance program.

The restriction applies to any carbonated beverage that lists sugar, corn syrup, or high-fructose corn syrup as the second ingredient.

The change will take effect on October 1st.
