American Red Cross Declares Emergency Blood Shortage: The American Red Cross is declaring a severe emergency blood shortage. The supply has dropped by 35-percent in the last month alone. When blood supplies are low, it can affect the ability to treat those in need such as chemotherapy patients with underlying blood disorders and those living with sickle cell disease. The organization is calling on people to donate as it says the demand from hospitals has outpaced the available supply of blood. The divisional chief medical officer at American Red Cross pointed to inclement winter weather leading to canceled blood drives and a moderately severe flu season as reasons donations are down. Sign up to give blood by using the Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS.
