Murder charges are being filed against a North Olmsted man in the fatal shooting of his wife.
Police responded to a home on Lorain Road Friday evening after receiving a call from Joseph Halpin reporting that he had cocked a gun and that it had gone off, injuring his wife.
Police say Halpin tried to shoot himself when they arrived, but that the firearm malfunctioned and he was taken into custody.
The victim -- 39-year-old Laura Hoopengardner -- later died at a local hospital.
Halpin was arraigned on Monday.
