The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has issued a geomagnetic storm warning for Nov. 12 that could result in a Northern Lights appearance as far south as Alabama.

A geomagnetic storm is a major disturbance in the Earth’s magnetic field, according to the Space Weather Prediction Center.

This week’s storm is caused by a series of coronal mass ejections- eruptions of solar material and magnetic fields- that started over the weekend.

NOAA has ranked tomorrow’s storm as a G4, not as intense as G5 storm in May 2024, which had those as far south as Florida seeing the Northern Lights.

NOAA has encouraged U.S. stargazers to monitor the sky after dark Tuesday and check spaceweather.gov for updates and aurora forecasts.
