Authorities in Southern California have broken up what they call the largest Home Depot theft case in the country. Prosecutors say a theft ring linked to more than 600 incidents at 71 stores stole an estimated $10 million in merchandise. Nine suspects have been charged and five others arrested in the case. Surveillance video shows the group climbing shelves and concealing items inside jackets. Officials warn organized retail crime is on the rise nationwide, pointing to similar thefts in Philadelphia where $50,000 in tools and equipment were recently stolen.
Police say David Ahl, who a ran a storefront called ARIA Wholesale in Tarzana, was at the center of the operation. Ahl faces 48 felony counts including conspiracy, organized retail theft, grand theft, receiving stolen property, and money laundering, authorities said.
