President Trump signed an executive order mandating prosecution for those who desecrate the American flag, stating that it is "uniquely and inherently offensive and provocative."

The executive order will direct the attorney general to prosecute flag desecration cases and clarify the scope of the First Amendment in relation to flag desecration.

The order also instructs the attorney general and secretary of homeland security to take action against non-citizens who desecrate the flag, including denying visas or other immigration benefits.

Recent incidents of flag desecration include anti-Israel protests where the American flag was burned, as well as anti-ICE protesters waving Mexican flags while burning the American flag in Los Angeles.

Trump's executive order follows previous initiatives to promote patriotism, such as banning State Department offices from flying flags other than the American flag and installing large American flags at the White House.
