U.S. To Stop Producing Pennies

The U.S. Treasury has made its final order for penny blanks, signaling the end of penny production by early next year.

The U.S. Mint will continue making pennies until the existing blanks run out, after which no more pennies will be produced.

Stores will have to round up or down to the nearest nickel when pennies become scarce, but they can still be used for purchases.

Former President Barack Obama and President Donald Trump both considered eliminating the penny due to its cost and lack of use.

The Treasury Department expects to save $56 million immediately by discontinuing penny production, citing reduced material costs
