A man allegedly held captive by his parents for decades has released his first public statement.

The man, known only as "S" released the statement through the nonprofit organization Survivors Say: "I am a survivor of more than 20 years of captivity and domestic abuse. I was held prisoner in my home from the time I was taken out of the fourth grade at age 11 until two months ago at age 31 when I purposely set the fire that helped set me free."

He added "I am speaking out today to begin the process of reclaiming my life and to have my say in how my story is told."

"S" was found emaciated and weighed just 68 pounds when he was rescued from a burning home in Waterbury, Connecticut.

His stepmother, Kimberly Sullivan, has been charged with assault, kidnapping, unlawful restraint, cruelty to persons, and reckless endangerment.

"S" expressed gratitude for the care he has received, and thanked first responders, healthcare professionals, and those supporting him financially through a GoFundMe page.
