Job openings in the U.S. reached a surprise total in August.
According to Tuesday's report from the Labor Department, employers posted 8 million job openings for the month of August.
This was an unexpected jump for economists, who anticipated July's 7.7 million openings to remain steady.
Construction and local and state government showed the biggest increase in openings.
