The Department of Homeland Security has opened an investigation into the Secret Service's handling of the rally where former President Donald Trump was shot.

The DHS inspector general announced the probe on Wednesday, but did not offer a timeframe for the investigation.

The shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was able to get a clear shot at the stage from a rooftop outside the rally venue.

Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle has said the agency was "solely responsible" for the security failures.
