ABC News Political Analyst Steve Roberts spoke to Bill about President Biden faces a critical week as he struggles to convince fellow Democrats that he can win the election in November—and govern the country for another four years. The fallout from Biden’s disastrous debate performance continues to trouble and even terrify many Democrats who think he will lose to Donald Trump and drag down party candidates in close House and Senate races. Biden insists he will stay in the race but his interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos failed to quell the anxiety engulfing the party, and even his allies say he has to demonstrate vigor and vitality in unscripted campaign appearances over the next few days. As Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut told CNN, voters “need to see more from the president, and I hope that we see that this week…There are still questions. The clock is ticking.” To make matters worse for Biden, a growing number of Democrats are feeling anger toward the president, his family, and his inner core of advisers. They feel they’ve been deceived by a White House that hid from them Biden’s accelerating decline, which burst into public view at the debate. Increasingly they see Biden’s decision to run for a second term as a foolish and fateful decision that will turn the presidency and the Congress over to Trump and his allies--and damage the country in countless ways.
