For as long as most Chicago residents can remember, more than a million people would line up along Lake Shore Drive every 4th of July to take in the city’s world-class fireworks display. But that was then and this is now.

City officials have pulled the plug on this year’s planned Independence Day event, they announced on Thursday. No explanation was offered for the abrupt cancellation.

However, Chicago officials are reminding people that a fireworks display is presented every Wednesday and Saturday through Labor Day at Navy Pier – even though the 4th falls on a Thursday this year.
