Apparently, the Metro Transit Authority wants a piece of the New York City Marathon’s pie.
The agency is demanding $750,000 to let runners cross the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge to make up for the toll revenue it loses during the famed race, a leaked memo reveals. If the MTA doesn’t get the money, it’s threatening to restrict use of the bridge to just one of its two levels – meaning Marathon organizers would likely have to restrict the number of people who participate. Runners have used both levels of the bridge for the past 36 years.
“New Yorkers love Marathon Sunday, but taxpayers cannot be expected to subsidize a wealthy non-government organization like the New York Road Runners to the tune of $750,000,” says Catherine Sheridan, president of MTA Bridges and Tunnels. New York Road Runners, the organization that stages the annual marathon, has not yet responded to the demand.
