An Australian father is dead after he was bitten by a snake at a child care facility.
Deeragun resident Jerromy Brookes, 47, was picking up his child from a daycare in Townsville when someone at the facility spotted a snake, authorities say. Brookes, who’s not a professional snake wrangler, attempted to catch the reptile – and was bitten “multiple times,” police say. Instead of seeking immediate medical assistance, Brookes went home, where his wife attempted to treat him, says Queensland Ambulance Service Director Paula Marten. “His wife has immobilized his arm and wrapped it, when the onset of the symptoms occurred,” Marten says. The wife “then commenced CPR as the patient went into cardiac arrest,” Marten adds.
Brookes died after being rushed to a nearby hospital, according to Marten. Although the type of snake that bit him has not been identified, snake handler Trish Prendergast says, “For something to be so fatal and quick like that, it would either have been an eastern brown or a taipan.”
