With Super Tuesday looming this week, last week’s balloting in Michigan contained warning signs for both President Biden and Donald Trump. Both men are virtually sure shots to win their party’s nomination and face off in November, but neither one is the overwhelming favorite in their own ranks. More than 100,000 voters or about 13 percent of the total turnout in the Democratic primary backed an ‘uncommitted’ slate, and many of the dissidents voice deep resentment for Biden’s support of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. Compounding Biden’s problems: a New York Times poll which showed that three out of five of his supporters from 2020 now agree he’s “just too old’ to be president. But Trump has problems too. While Biden got 81 percent of the Democratic vote in Michigan Trump received only 68 per cent of the Republican vote, with former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley continuing to attract a significant segment of anti-Trump Republicans. She will likely drop her bid after Super Tuesday but she has demonstrated that while Trump clearly dominates the Republican Party, plenty of party members—especially higher income college grads—despise the former president and think he lacks the right ‘temperament’ for the job. Simply put, if Biden has an age problem Trump has a crazy problem.
