(South Euclid) The City of South Euclid's Planning Commission is considering a pair of proposals that would change the rules on commercial development. One would ban restaurant drive-thrus on the city's two downtown commercial districts, Mayfield-Green and Cedar-Centre. South Euclid Planning and Development Director Michael Love says the plan is designed to promote a more walkable, pedestrian friendly environment in those districts. Currently, those restaurants with drive-thrus operate under a conditional use permit. Which means they require approval from city council. The new measure would allow for new restaurants to operate in other commercial districts in the city under a conditional use permit. Right now, those places can move in there without regulation.
The other proposal would restrict dollar stores in the city to be located outside of a thousand feet of another dollar store. These would be stores like a Dollar General or a Family Dollar. Love says those type of small box retailers can be a drain on the city's resources, like police, fire, and building departments. He says it's also a way to keep such stores from opening up in close proximity to one another.
The planning commission will review each proposal on Thursday and make recommendations to city council. At that point council will hold a public hearing before voting on them.
