At least four Alabama residents are dead after attempting TikTok’s latest challenge.
The news comes one day after authorities issued a warning about the dangerous stunt, which involves jumping out of a speeding boat. "The four that we responded to when they jumped out of the boat, they literally broke their neck and, you know, basically an instant death," says Childersburg Rescue Squad Captain Jim Dennis.
A broken neck is just one of multiple possible injuries that can occur from attempting the challenge, which has been floating around the social media site since 2020. "You can wind up with broken bones, a broken neck, you could end up running into the propeller of your own boat, or another boat could run over you,” says Gail Kulp, executive director of the Sea Tow Foundation. "Hitting the water from a moving boat is like hitting concrete from jumping multiple stories up. That would cause lots of damage, if not death.”
