Authorities say a New Jersey man is lucky to be alive after he was strike by lightning while working on a soccer field.
Eric Baumgartner, 39, was painting lines on the field at Woodbridge Township’s Iselin Middle School on Wednesday when the strike occurred, according to Mayor John McCormac. "They were using some kind of metal machinery to paint the lines, and he was struck," McCormac says. "He had burns on his foot and other parts of his body." Baumgartner was also left unconscious with no pulse, the mayor adds.
Fortunately, Woodbridge Township Police Officer Robert McPartland witnessed the incident and administered CPR on Baumgartner – an act that likely saved the victim’s life, McCormac says. For his part, McPartland says he was just doing his job. "I'm just happy that I was close and was able to get to him as fast as I did," he says.
