Ohio House Votes to Hold Special Election in August

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--The Ohio House of Representatives has approved a measure that would set up a special election this August, regarding constitutional amendments in the state.

Majority Republicans voted in favor of putting a measure before voters, asking them to approve a change that would require a 60% vote for constitutional amendments in Ohio, instead of the current simple majority.

The vote prompted protests Wednesday at the Ohio Statehouse, with critics arguing Republicans are trying to cut down an effort to pass a constitutional amendment on abortion rights in the state, which could be on the ballot this November.

Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose has ordered all 88 county Boards of Elections to prepare for the August special election, with the ballot language likely ready by the end of this month.

Experts say the special election would cost the state about $20-million.
