A West Chicago man is dead after he tried to save a goose that had walked into traffic.

The incident happened at about 6 a.m. in Elgin Township, Illinois, where a goose had strayed into southbound traffic on St. Charles Street, according to Kane County Sheriff’s officials. Rateb Argan, 59, saw the goose and pulled over to help, authorities say. As he was attempting to catch the bird, Argan was struck by a 2012 Chevy Express van, per sheriff’s officials.
