WICKLIFFE, OH - A garage explosion on Ridgeview Drive in Wickliffe took the live of 18-year-old Nathan Greger on Sunday. Wickliffe police said dispatch starting receiving calls at 10:46 a.m. on Sunday with both fire and police responding to a home on Ridgeview near Rodgers Drive. When they arrive on scene, a detached garage in the rear of the home was actively burning. Along with the flames, first responders encountered explosions of apparent fireworks consistently going off for over 10 minutes after the initial call.
Wickliffe Police say they began evacuating the nearby residents while Fire Department personnel worked on the actively burning structure. Once the fire was extinguished, Greger was located within the garage structure.
Multiple agencies assisted investigating the scene, assisting the Wickliffe Police and Fire Departments were the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms & Explosives (ATF), the State Fire Marshal - Fire & Explosion Investigation Bureau, the Lake County Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team, and the Lake County Coroner’s Office.
The investigation determined that fireworks were stored in the rear portion of the garage and the explosion is considered an accident. No other injuries were reported.
