Garnering more than 86% of the vote, in a special election to fill the seat for the remainder of the 41st Congress, Republican Joseph Rainey was sworn in the following December. The first African American elected to the US Senate was Republican Hiram Rhodes Revels, who (in 1869) filled the seat vacated by Confederate President Jefferson Davis.
