COLUMBUS, Ohio (WTVN)--The law making it easier for teachers in Ohio to carry a firearm in school is now in effect.

House Bill 99 took effect on Monday, after it was signed earlier this year by Governor Mike DeWine.

It significantly lowers the number of training hours required for a teacher to be permitted to have a firearm in the classroom. The decision to allow armed teachers is still up to each school district. Parents are also required to be notified if a district allows teachers to be armed.

Experts highly recommended teachers get additional training, beyond what is required by law.

Critics argue armed teachers will not make schools safer.
