Elyria High School Freshmen Found Dead in Home

(ELYRIA) - The community of Elyria received a call from Amy Higgins, the spokesperson for the Elyria School District. In that call, she revealed that a male student was found dead in his home Monday morning.

Police responded to a call of a possible homicide at a 3rd Street home around 5 am on Monday. Officers found that 14-year-old Shane Edwards Jr. had been shot and died of his injuries.

Elyria School District Superintendent Amy Schloss said in a statement, "We all have heavy hearts," adding that the school has counselors and social workers working with staff and students, and the Lorain County Crisis Team is available for additional support.

UPDATE:

Elyria Mayor Frank Whitfield spoke Monday, September 12th, at 2 pm and said that since the matter is under investigation, The city will not be releasing many details on the shooting. Mayor Whitfield did say that is unacceptable.

Police Chief Pelko also said this is unacceptable but added that the Elyria Police Department and Detectives are following up on all leads.
