(Cleveland) - The Baker Mayfield era in Cleveland is over. The Browns have traded the quarterback to the Carolina Panthers, and he could face the Browns in Week 1 of the upcoming NFL season.
Reports from numerous media sources say the Browns will receive a conditional draft pick, either a fourth or fifth-round pick in 2024, all depending on how Mayfield does with the Panthers. The Panthers will pay $4.85 million of Mayfield's salary, and the Browns will pay $10.5 million. ESPN's Adam Schefter says Baker agreed to forego the remainder of his $18.8 million salary.
Mayfield will be competing against Sam Darnold to be the starter for the Panthers. They competed against each other in 2018 to be the first pick in the NFL Draft. Mayfield was the number one pick, while Darnold was number three.
The next big question for the Browns is who will be starting for them against the Panthers in September. Quarterback Deshaun Watson is still waiting for the outcome of a hearing about sexual assaults that have been alleged by at least two dozen women. Watson could be suspended as long as the entire season. Whatever the outcome of the hearing, Watson or the NFL are likely to appeal the ruling. The Browns still have backup quarterbacks Jacoby Brissett and Josh Dobbs on the roaster.
Team owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam issued this statement:
“We want to thank Baker for all his contributions to the Cleveland Browns. From the moment he was drafted, he gave his all for this organization and this city. With his fierce competitive spirit, he excited the fanbase and accomplished things that no player at his position had done in Cleveland for a very long time. He also made a difference in the community, whether it was hosting events at the Boys and Girls Club, honoring our troops, supporting the Special Olympics as well as countless other charitable endeavors. We are grateful for everything he did for this organization and wish him and Emily well in the future.”
Browns General Manager Andrew Berry issued this statement:
“Baker Mayfield infused our organization with tenacity and grit during his time as our starting quarterback. Baker’s competitiveness, toughness and ability to persevere were all characteristics that endeared him to our city as well as his teammates. He will always have a unique place in Browns history for what he accomplished and we wish him well as he continues his career.”
