(Medina, OH) - A self-guided family walking tour that will showcase the first and only arboretum in Medina County to celebrate the arboretum accreditation from the ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program at The Morton Register with the Spring Grove Arboretum.
Accredited in early March, the Spring Grove Arboretum has more than 600 trees and 81 different species.
The arboretum is a collaboration between the City of Medina and the Friends of the Cemetery. The Friends of the Cemetery's mission has been the beautification, historic preservation and maintenance of Medina’s two cemeteries for more than 20 years.
Spring Grove Cemetery will be celebrating its Walkabout on Saturday.
In October 2020, the Friends of the Cemetery hosted the Tree Walk and Arboretum Kickoff for people to take a tour of the trees and establish that they were working toward accreditation for the cemetery.
The link leads to an ArborScope program with information from Barlett Tree Experts, which completed a tree inventory and survey of Spring Grove in early 2020.
The group continues to plant new trees and species, with a goal to have more than 100 different types of species. Approximately 15 to 20 trees are planted each year in the cemetery.
Each family participating Saturday will be offered a free tree seedling from Bartlett Tree Experts.
The walkabout is accessible for everyone, with easy access for strollers, wagons and wheelchairs. Maps will be provided in front of the Mears Building, with plenty of parking available by it. In addition to looking for the permanent signs, the event will include a tree-themed scavenger hunt.
The walk is scheduled for 1-3 p.m. at the Spring Grove Cemetery at 775 E. Washington St.
