Teen Drowns In Quarry in Independence

(Independence) - A teenage boy drowned over the weekend while swimming with friends in a closed quarry.

It happened late Saturday afternoon. Witnesses say the 16-year-old went under the water, and never came back up. His body was recovered about three hours later.

The mine was used for the discovery and processing of haydite, a decorative stone used in landscaping.

According to Independence Today, the mine closed in 2019, and the owner was in the process of removing buildings, and restoring the mine to its natural state, with eventual donation of the site to the National Park Service. Over the years, the mine filled with water.
