New Low-Cost Airline Comes To NE Ohio

(North Canton) - A startup low-cost airline will begin service on Thursday from Akron-Canton Airport (CAK). Breeze Airways will offer service from CAK to Tampa, New Orleans, and Charleston, South Carolina, for as low as $39 one way.

Aviation expert Jay Ratliff says that Breeze will be starting off using smaller Embraer aircraft with two-and-two seating, but they have on order 80 Airbus aircraft, and they plan to expand to serve 16 cities, mainly smaller cities, to keep down the cost. Columbus will have service from Breeze starting in July to five cities.

Breeze chose CAK for one of its initial markets, because the airline is receiving financial support from the Air Service Restoration program offered through JobsOhio, the state's economic development arm. This is the first time the program has been used.

CAK vice president of marketing Lisa Dalpiaz says the airport has been talking with Breeze for two years, but talks were put on hold during the pandemic. Breeze originally went by the name Moxy.
