Escaped Carjacking & Rape Suspect Arrested by U.S. Marshals

Cleveland, OH - Earlier this morning, members of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department and the U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force arrested 17-year-old Lavelle Spencer. Spencer was wanted for Escape.

On May 15, 2021, Spencer escaped from the Warrensville Developmental Center, where he was being treated, by court order, to stand trial. Spencer is awaiting trial on charges including robbery, aggravated robbery, grand theft, having weapons while under disability, failure to comply with an order of a police officer, assault, gross sexual imposition, kidnapping and rape.

The U.S. Marshals offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to Spencer’s capture. Numerous tips were vetted by investigators throughout the course of the investigation. A joint team of investigators located Spencer hiding in a residence located on the 3900 block of East 74th Street in Cleveland. A Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s K-9 Officer located Spencer hiding in an attic, where he was taken into custody. Spencer was evaluated by EMS and transported to the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Detention Center. 

U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott added, “Our team along with the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department and the Ohio Highway Patrol worked around the clock to ensure a safe capture. We hope this outcome brings comfort to the victims of these horrible crimes.”
