(Cleveland) - Former State Rep. Bryan Flannery (D-Bath Township) has announced he's running for the Democratic nomination for the 11th Congressional District. A special election will be held later this year to fill the seat, vacated by Marcia Fudge when she became Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.
Flannery told our partners at 3 News he acknowledges he's the only white candidate running in a district with a long history of being majority black, and represented by blacks. The 11th District, and before it the 21st District, have had black representation since the election of Lou Stokes in 1968.
Flannery joins Cuyahoga County Councilwoman Shontel Brown, former Cleveland Councilman Jeff Johnson, former State Rep. Shirley Smith, former State Rep. John Barnes, James Jerome Bell, Isaac Powell, Lateek Shabazz, Tarik Shabazz, and Felicia Washington Ross.
