CLEVELAND - Major League Baseball filed for a trademark on the name “Citizens” on August 17, 2020. While it does not mean the Cleveland Indians will become the Cleveland Citizens it appears that will be a real option and it does have some alliteration and is certainly non offensive.
Securing the name through the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office means the league and the Cleveland baseball team would not have to negotiate a deal with anyone for the rights to the mark. It is quite possible numerous names will be trademarked to give the club and the league more option for a new name to replace the Indians.
