(Cleveland) - A City of Cleveland fire lieutenant has died from COVID-19 complications. Lieutenant Richard Petras died Saturday.
Petras served the Cleveland Division of Fire for 26 years, many of those years at Station 30 in the Glenville neighborhood. Most recently, Petras was assigned to the Fire Training Academy. He was promoted to Lieutenant in July.
Petras saved multiple people from an apartment fire in 1999 that he came upon whle driving to work. He was recognized in 2011 for saving lives at a fire on Euclid Avenue. In 2015, Petras and two other Cleveland firefighters were recognized as "Whelen Everyday Champions," for helping people in a house fire they came upon while responding to a medical call.
City officials, including the Mayor, Safety Director, and Fire Chief, offer their deepest sympathies.
