Akron - Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh announced today that Summit County Common Pleas Court Judge Joy Malek Oldfield sentenced Donovan Conley, 48, of Lessig Avenue in Akron, to 20 years in prison for having sex with a teen he met online.
On November 12th, 2019, Conley pled guilty to the following charges:
- Four Counts of Unlawful Sexual Conduct with a Minor – Felonies of the 3rd degree
- Illegal Use of a Minor in Nudity Oriented Material – a Felony of the 2nd degree
In September of 2015, an Akron mother reported her 15-year-old daughter missing. Investigators determined the teen ran away with the then 44-year-old Conley. The investigation discovered Conley met the teen through the app “Whisper” and the two then connected on Facebook. Conley and the teen then engaged in a sexual relationship.
Conley was taken into custody in 2015 and released on bond. He eluded police since then and was eventually arrested in January of 2019.
Judge Oldfield also designated Conley a Tier II sex offender. Once Conley is released from prison, he will have to register with the local sheriff every 180 days for 25 years.
“I’m pleased knowing Conley will spend a significant amount of time in prison. The community is safer with him locked up,” said Prosecutor Walsh. “I hope this case serves as a warning to parents and guardians to keep an eye on what your children are doing online. Sexual predators are lurking behind these profiles, waiting to groom children into these types of situations. People may not realize the dangers of using apps like Whisper, TikTok, Snapchat, KIk, ASK.FM, and even Facebook.”
