Congressman Anthony Gonzalez working on endorsement bill

(Cleveland) - U.S. Rep. Anthony Gonzalez, is considering proposing a new national law to give college athletes the opportunity to make endorsement money.

The Northeast Ohio Republican, and former Ohio State, and NFL player says he has spoken with Buckeyes athletic director Gene Smith about the issue, and will draft a proposal after smith makes a recommendation to the NCAA.

A North Carolina congressman has already introduced a bill that would wound allow college players to receive cash for endorsements, and would pull non-profit tax exemptions from NCAA schools that don't go along.

On Monday, California governor Gavin Newsom signed a bill allowing college athletes there, to profit off their name and likeness.

While it does not allow athletes to receive direct payments from colleges and universities, it does allow the, to profit from youth coaching and endorsements.
