Cleveland - Mayor Frank G. Jackson, Director of Public Safety Michael McGrath and Chief of Police Calvin D. Williams announce Christopher Viland as the city’s first Cleveland Division of Police Inspector General.
“Christopher Viland has been selected as the first Inspector General for the Cleveland Division of Police. This position is one of many changes set forth in fulfillment of the Consent Decree and I remain fully committed to implementing them all,” said Mayor Frank G. Jackson. “Today we are one step closer to achieving our goals to reduce crime and better ensure public safety while also working to improve the relationship between the City’s police Division and the communities they serve.”
The Police Inspector General is a civilian position responsible for monitoring, reviewing, and auditing policies and practices of the Cleveland Division of Police. The inspector general will also determine compliance with federal and state law and review the effectiveness and consistency of the Division’s bias-free, community policing and procedural justice principals.
Viland’s most recent position is Chief of Police at the Solon Police Department. He holds a Juris Doctor from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law and is a General Practice Attorney.
“We are happy to announce that Mr. Christopher Viland has accepted the offer to become the first City of Cleveland, Division of Police Inspector General,” said Police Chief Calvin D. Williams. “Mr. Viland comes to us with an extensive background in law enforcement, with long term experience as Chief of Police of the Solon Police Department. Furthermore, his extensive experience practicing law will bring an additional layer of expertise which will help the Division to continue to make necessary changes while striving for excellence.”
Viland accepted the position on Aug. 5, 2019. Terms of hiring will be finalized following the completion of routine administrative procedures.
