Parma - Parma native Michael Mizanin, a.k.a., The Miz, will visit Parma and his alma mater, Normandy High School, Wednesday, July 3rd from 5 to 8 p.m.
The professional wrestler, actor and media personality is returning home before the Fourth of July holiday and taking time to visit his school and hometown. As part of his visit, Parma Mayor Tim DeGeeter is declaring the day, “Mike The Miz Day.”
“Mike is proud of his Parma roots, and we are glad he is returning to celebrate Independence Day with his family and friends,” DeGeeter said. “His staff has planned a fun event for residents and his WWE fans. I hope people join me, the superintendent, Parma City Council and elected officials in welcoming him home.”
At 6 p.m., the mayor, school superintendent and city council will recognize Mizanin, who will then talk to the crowd and kick off the city’s annual Christmas in July Food Drive. Admission is free to the event, but visitors are asked to bring non-perishable food items that will be donated to the Parma Hunger Center. Blue donation bins will be located on site. Online donations at the Parma Hunger Center website will also be accepted at http://www.plcparma.org/parma-hunger-center.html. The drive helps feed school children during the summer break when they don’t have access to free school lunches.
Doors open at 5 p.m. The event will be in the school’s parking lot and field behind Normandy High School. Food trucks will be available with food for purchase. A DJ will play music, and classic cars will be on display. USA Network’s TV show Miz and Mrs will be filming during the event. Mizanin and his friends will be walking around and mingling with fans and attendees.
“The Miz is an honored graduate of our district. We’re very proud to count him as a distinguished member of our alumni. He has repeatedly been very gracious to our school district, and we appreciate his continued support of his hometown,” said Charles Smialek, Parma City School District superintendent. “We’re excited for a great Parma night this week!”
A stellar athlete, Mizanin was captain of his Normandy baseball and cross country teams. He also swam, played basketball for three years and football for one year. He was the student government president and senior editor of the school’s yearbook. Ironically, he did not wrestle
After graduating from high school in 1999, he attended Miami University, where he studied business before being cast on MTV’s “The Real World” in 2001. The show changed his career plans and launched him into reality TV. He also appeared on MTV’s Real World Road Rules and other reality TV shows before switching his focus to professional wrestling and acquiring many championship titles as he honed his wrestler skills and The Miz persona.
He currently has a popular TV show called Miz & Mrs, which highlights him, his wife and their 1-year-old daughter at home and at work. Mizanin and his wife, Maryse, met at the “workplace.” Maryse is also a professional wrestler and has earned prestigious wrestling titles, including being crowned twice a WWE Divas Champion.
In addition to coming home for “Mike The Miz Day,” Mizanin will also be participating in the Major League Baseball All-Star Celebrity Softball Game on Sunday, July 7th at Progressive Field.
