The U.S. military says it has no interest in engaging in a new conflict in the Middle East, but Iran is making that more difficult by the day.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Iran is responsible for an attack on two oil tankers near the Strait of Hormuz in the Middle East.
Iranian small boats were still near one of the disabled tankers adrift in the Gulf of Oman as of Thursday evening, according to a US official. That ship's crew is sheltering on the USS Bainbridge nearby. Meanwhile, the other ship targeted by Iran is in danger of sinking, but its crew is safe -- transported to an Iranian port.
The U.S. military on Friday released a video it said shows Iran’s Revolutionary Guard removing an unexploded limpet mine from one of the oil tankers targeted near the Strait of Hormuz, suggesting the Islamic Republic sought to remove evidence of its involvement from the scene. Iran denies being involved, accusing the U.S. instead of waging an “Iranophobic campaign” against it.
