Parma - Saturday, June 1st, is the dedication ceremony for the renovated Michael A. Ries Park and Playground on the northeast corner of Forestwood Drive, Parma.
Parma Mayor Tim DeGeeter, Recreation Department Director Mickey Vittardi and Ward 3 Councilman Mark Casselberry invited Parma residents and media to attend the dedication ceremony, which started at 10 a.m.
The park was, in part, designed by Recreation Department Assistant Director Dave Elhert. A father and advocate for physical fitness, Elhert wanted to create a park that is not only entertaining and safe, but also one that offers Parma’s youth the chance to engage in physical activity and, thus, subsequently benefit from the fitness-oriented playground.
With $35,000 from the State Capital Budget Bill and a $15,000 discount from equipment company Snider Recreation, the city was able to get a $100,000 playground structure for under $50,000, according to Vittardi.
The playground includes a rock wall, merry-go-round, multiple swing sets, a zip line, climbers and two slides.
