CLEVELAND – Wow! What a weekend it was last week for us in Week 4 of the college football season and Week 3 of the NFL campaign as “Picks With Nick” finished hitting 70% against the spread (ATS). We finished 7-3 in our ten college football and NFL selections, bringing our total winning percentage to 56% ATS on the season. Below is our college football slate for Week 5. Always keep in mind these selections are for entertainment purposes only. Good luck this weekend!
A quick glance at our numbers on the season against the Vegas spread:
CFB: 11-10-0 (52%)
NFL: 7-4-1 (64%)
Total: 18-14-1 (56%)
Our picks are made against Las Vegas oddsmakers merely helping create football interactions on Facebook and Twitter, as well as online and on-air content for Newsradio WTAM 1100 and WTAM.com.
Similar to the last two seasons, our goal is to win 53% of our picks against the spread. Las Vegas sports books, give us 11/10 odds or -110, so in order to break even in picking games against the spread (ATS) we must win 52.4% of the games we select. Winning 58% of picks ATS would place you among the most elite sports handicappers in the world. We’ll shoot for somewhere between 53% - 58% again this season.
We are again keeping our college and NFL selections separate, but we will update the results from both weekly with full transparency, seeing how we stack up against Las Vegas oddsmakers. We are coming off back-to-back winning seasons in which we hit 54% ATS in college football and the NFL combined in 2016 and 56% in both combined last season in 2017. So far, in college and the NFL combined, we are hitting 56% ATS.
Throughout the season it is important to understand that we will continually update our records in both college football and the NFL, totaling them also, and additionally, that Newsradio WTAM 1100 and I do not condone illegal sports wagering. With Week 5 of the college football season kicking off on Thursday night, let’s just dive into our full slate of selections against the spread.
Below is our full slate of college football picks featuring four selections ATS for Week 5:
Game: West Virginia Mountaineers vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders
Where: Lubbock, Texas – Jones AT&T Stadium
Kickoff: 12:00 pm ET
TV: ESPN2
Spread: West Virginia -3.5
Nick’s Pick: When people think of Kliff Kingsbury and Texas Tech they automatically think offense, offense and more offense. Be careful. This is the most improved defensive unit in the Big 12 and they showed in Week 4 they can beat anybody…even on the road. Now they get to host No. 12 West Virginia. Nick’s Pick here is Texas Tech +3.5.

Game: Virginia Tech Hokies vs. Duke Blue Devils
Where: Durham, North Carolina – Wallace Wade Stadium
Kickoff: 7:00 pm ET
TV: ESPN2
Spread: Duke -5
Nick’s Pick: Erase last weekend’s stunning upset loss by Virginia Tech to 28.5-point underdog Old Dominion. This line against Duke would be -1…maybe even a pick ‘em. Don’t overreact to last week. Duke hasn’t played anyone tough just yet. Nick’s Pick is Virginia Tech +5.
Game: Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Penn State Nittany Lions
Where: University Park, Pennsylvania – Beaver Stadium
Kickoff: 7:30 pm ET
TV: ABC
Spread: Ohio State -3
Nick’s Pick: Yes, we’re aware that Penn State has a “White Out” planned for the Buckeyes…it won’t matter. Penn State struggled for more than a half with Illinois and Ohio State has passed every test yet. Nick’s Pick is Ohio State -3.

Game: Oregon Ducks vs. California Golden Bears
Where: Berkeley, California – Memorial Stadium
Kickoff: 10:30 pm ET
TV: FS1
Spread: Oregon -1.5
Nick’s Pick: One of our favorite trends right here…a team off a big game loss. Oregon was on College Gameday hosting Stanford with the college football world watching and should have won behind quarterback Justin Herbert, but lost in overtime. The Ducks are still thinking about that loss as undefeated and nationally ranked California awaits. Nick’s Pick here California +1.5.
