Sewage Overflow Threatens Triathlon At Edgewater Park

CLEVELAND - Crews from the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District collected water quality data Wednesday morning, and will do so again in the afternoon, at Edgewater Beach.

The beach remains closed after 130,000 gallons of raw sewage flowed into Lake Erie during Monday's storms.

Organizers with USA Triathlon say they expect the event will go on as expected but, if not, add they do have a contingency plan. No word on what that plan B may be.

Jenny Fitz with the Cleveland Triathlon Club says, in the event the swim is cancelled, they'll probably go ahead with a "duathlon", meaning they'll bike and run, but stay out of the water.

Between 6 and 7,000 participants are expected, with an estimated 10,000 spectators taking it all in.
