It's not completely new to city firefighters, but the Cleveland Division of Fire announced earlier today the purchase of 50 additional thermal imagining cameras. The cameras allow firefighters engaged at the scene to see differing temperature gradients surrounding them within a fire, allowing them to know when fire has gotten into a ceiling or behind walls. It also allows a firefighter to see through smoke and darkness, and identify victims who may be trapped inside engulfed spaces. The cameras can also help during non-fire and water rescues. Cleveland Fire Ladder and Rescue Squads had already been using the thermal technology, but now all 24 companies in the city will have access to it.
