Historic Akron church destroyed in fire

(Summit County) - The former St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and Sunday school at Forge and East Market Streets in Akron caught fire late Wednesday night. Heavy smoke and flames could be seen coming from the historic structure which is now part of the University of Akron.

The building has been vacant for the past year or more, and was recently used as the University of Akron Ballet Center. It dates back to 1885.

The church played a role in the establishment of Alcoholics Anonymous, which was created in Akron in 1935. The cause of the blaze is undetermined. No one was hurt.
