(Independence) - Preliminary operations have begun on resurfacing and augmenting the 40 year old Valley View Bridge.

It's a quarter billion dollar project that will take about 6 years to complete.

Amanda McFarland of ODOT District 12 says I-480 traffic will continue to flow throughout the entire process, with few disruptions.

Survey work is being done around the bridge, with construction of the base of a new bridge starting in the spring of 2018.

The new bridge will be built between the old bridge, and will serve as express lanes for motorists who want to avoid the I-77 merge.

The old bridge is being resurfaced. Traffic lanes won't shift until 2019, and McFarland says the project is expected to be completed in 2024.
