CLEVELAND – Week 10 of the college football season has already seen seven games played opening on Tuesday and Wednesday with a trio of MAC games, followed by four match ups on Thursday evening highlighted by Temple upsetting Navy, a 7-point favorite, 34-26 in Philadelphia. “Picks With Nick” is continuing to make selections against the spread (for entertainment purposes only, of course) in both college and NFL football.
Following our first season, in which we nailed 54% of the games we selected against the spread (ATS), we are back at it again enjoying another winning season so far. In fact, here’s our numbers through nine weeks of college football and eight weeks of the NFL against the number for full transparency:
CFB: 23-22-2 (51%)
NFL: 21-14 (60%)
Total: 44-36-2 (55%)
Our picks are made against Las Vegas oddsmakers merely helping create football interactions on Facebook and Twitter, as well as online and on-air content for Newsradio WTAM 1100 and WTAM.com.
Similar to last football season, our goal is to win 53% of our picks against the spread. Las Vegas sports books, give us 11/10 odds or -110, so in order to break even in picking games against the spread (ATS) we must win 52.4% of the games we select. Winning 58% of picks ATS would place you among the most elite sports handicappers in the world. We’ll shoot for somewhere between 53% - 58% again this season.
We are again keeping our college and NFL selections separate, but we will update the results weekly with full transparency seeing how we stack up against the Las Vegas oddsmakers. We are coming off a winning first season in which we hit 54% ATS in college football and NFL combined in 2016.
“Picks With Nick” will also feature a radio segment weekly on Newsradio WTAM 1100 discussing our selections.
Below is our full slate of college football picks featuring five selections ATS for Week 10:
Game: Florida Gators vs. Missouri Tigers
Where: Columbia, Missouri – Memorial Stadium
Kickoff: 12:00 pm ET
TV: ESPN2
Spread: Missouri -3
Nick’s Pick: Things haven’t been smooth in Gainesville on or off the field for the Gators this season. That said, this line seems like a bit of an overreaction to some of those factors that are out of the players’ control. Florida is better on both sides of the football in this conference clash and should find a way to keep Mizzou winless in SEC play, even having to go on the road to do so. Nick’s Pick is Florida +3.
Game: Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Iowa Hawkeyes
Where: Iowa City, Iowa – Kinnick Stadium
Kickoff: 3:30 pm ET
TV: ESPN
Spread: Ohio State -18.5
Nick’s Pick: This is a classic “trap game” for Ohio State with a trip to Kinnick Stadium sandwiched in-between two huge Big Ten showdowns with Penn State and Michigan State. Sure, the Buckeyes ultimately find a way to win this football game, but the Hawkeyes will do just enough to keep this game close until the fourth quarter with Ohio State not completely focused on the task at-hand. Nick’s Pick is Iowa +18.5.
Game: Iowa State Cyclones vs. West Virginia Mountaineers
Where: Morgantown, West Virginia – Milan Puskar Stadium
Kickoff: 3:30 pm ET
TV: ESPN2
Spread: West Virginia -2.5
Nick’s Pick: The Cyclones have been the surprise team of the 2017 season, highlighted by their stunning victory over Oklahoma three weeks ago and now sitting atop the Big 12 standings at 4-1 with a No. 15 national ranking. Meanwhile West Virginia just got dismantled by Oklahoma State last week. That said, West Virginia is in desperation mode and nobody will be surprised by Iowa State anymore, because teams understand they are legit. The Mountaineers are a better overall team. Nick’s Pick is West Virginia -2.5.
Game: Stanford Cardinal vs. Washington State Cougars
Where: Pullman, Washington – Martin Stadium
Kickoff: 3:30 pm ET
TV: FOX
Spread: Washington State -2.5
Nick’s Pick: These two squads are completely different. Washington State goes five-wide, spread, hurry-up offense, while Stanford will huddle, run i-formation and look to slow the game down and control the tempo. The Cardinal got a wake-up call last week nearly falling to Oregon State and they should execute much better on Saturday afternoon in Pullman against a Washington State team they are better than as well as more physical than. Nick’s Pick is Stanford +2.5.
Game: LSU Tigers vs. Alabama Crimson Tide
Where: Tuscaloosa, Alabama – Bryant-Denny Stadium
Kickoff: 8:00 pm ET
TV: CBS
Spread: Alabama -21.5
Nick’s Pick: Alabama is clearly the better, more balanced team in this SEC rivalry showdown. However, LSU always gives the Crimson Tide their best shot. This will be a low-scoring, physical football game. Yes, No. 2-ranked ‘Bama finds a way to win, but the Tigers keep this game closer than people believe they will. Nick’s Pick is LSU +21.5.
